Bouma National Heritage Park, 150 square kilometres of coastal forest and Fijian jungle, makes up one third of Taveuni’s total area and is home to Tavoro (Bouma) Falls – the most iconic waterfalls in Fiji. The Lavena Coastal walk starts where the road ends on Taveuni’s wild south-eastern coast.  The winding coastal track takes you to breathtaking beaches, across rock-strewn rivers and into vine-covered jungle before ending with a dip at some spectacular waterfalls. For an even wilder experience, opt for the kayak trip to explore the remote rocky coast where waterfalls fall directly into the ocean.

Go Diving in Vanua Levu

The reefs off Vanua Levua are some of the best in Fiji – especially just off Savusavu. So if there’s one thing you should do there, it’s go snorkelling or scuba diving. Offshore, the Namena Marine Reserve’s world-class dive sites have benefitted from the landowner’s decision to ban fishing there since 1997.

The result is an astonishing variety of corals, invertebrates and over 1000 fish species. This close to a big fish migratory path, you’re likely to see dolphins and all types of whales as well.

You might also like to explore sheltered Natewa Bay’s all-weather dive sites or head to the island’s northern coast for one of it’s best kept secrets – the Great Sea Reef.  At close to 200km long, it’s one of the largest reefs in the world and virtually unexplored – there’s only one dive company!

Suva’s lively food market near the main wharf is the beating heart of the city.  Vendors sell seasonal fresh fruit and veg there all week but it really brims with colour, variety and bargains on Fridays and Saturdays. Get there early to avoid the crowds and catch the freshest deals.

When you’re done, take a stroll to the nearby Suva Handicraft Centre for cultural treasures like printed masi, kava bowls, war clubs or drums. 

Lots of stalls sell similar items so take your time to wander around and compare prices. Don’t be afraid to haggle with vendors for a fair price too – it’s all part of the experience and you’ll get a better deal! All markets are closed on Sundays.

Swim with Manta Rays Yasawa

Between the months of May and October, majestic manta rays gather in a small, shallow channel off Drawaqa island to feed. 

Watchers send out rhythmic drumbeats to signal their arrival on the high tide and get people in the water. Notoriously mysterious, there are only a few places in the world where you can swim with these gentle giants so make sure you add it to your holiday hitlist.

Pay the small entry and guide fee at Biausevu Village and embark on a 30-min stroll through the rainforest to the 20m-high, two-tiered waterfall and swimming hole that’s pure magic.

Naag Mandir

Apart from the 3m-high cobra-shaped rock within, the Naag Mandir Temple outside Labasa town looks like most others in Fiji. But devotees believe the rock has special healing powers so they make it lavish offerings of flowers, milk and fruit.

Equally odd is the stone’s mysterious growth spurt (from 6ft to 17ft) since it was discovered close to a century ago. Priests have even had the temple roof raised twice to accommodate the extra height! Visitors are welcome to stop by but if you do, make sure to remove your shoes before you enter.

Sacred Heart Church

This is one of Levuka’s most striking architectural sites – an old Gothic Revival Catholic church built in the late 1850s that doubles as a lighthouse. You can’t miss the Sacred Heart Church; you’ll hear it everywhere you go in Levuka.

Taveuni is most famous for its world-renowned dive sites, which attract both experienced divers and curious snorkelers from around the globe. Sites like the Great White Wall and others on the Rainbow Reef and Somosomo Strait are among the world’s top scuba sites

If you’re a history buff with time on your hands, head over to the Fiji Museum in its leafy haven at the end of town. The modest building is packed with interesting exhibits that date back some 3,700 years to the Lapita age, when sea-faring people first settled the Pacific islands. 

Take your time to explore the exhibits and you’ll discover a treasure trove of information on early voyagers to Fiji and the history of the Girmitayas in Fiji. There’s a little giftshop to browse and a small café overlooking Thurston Gardens that serves up some decent coffee and great food.

Fishing in Kadavu

There’s really no excuse not to drop a line when you have miles of magnificent reef and lagoons on your doorstep. 

If you’re looking to reel in some deepwater giants, ask your resort to hook you up with a friendly game fishing crew who’ll take you trolling for impressive Blue Marlin, Mahi-mahi or Pacific Sailfish during the season.

Hiking in Yasawa

Getting beyond your beach bungalow is a one of the best ways to spend your days in the Yasawa islands. There are deserted beaches to discover, scenic lookouts to swoon over and romantic sunset summits to conquer.

The rocky peak at Waya Lailai in the southern Yasawas is particularly picturesque but anywhere along the island chain will give you spectacular view of the region’s natural beauty.

Sharing the ocean with these gentle filter-feeding giants should at the top of your Fiji bucketlist. 

It’s incredibly calming and fascinating to watch these majestic creatures do graceful somersaults while feeding or glide in formation above a reef cleaning station. Kadavu is one of the best places in Fiji to swim with mantas and you can get your fix at popular reef sites off eastern Ono Island or Kadavu’s south coast.

Tavoro Waterfall

On an island dripping with waterfalls, Tavoro’s triple cascades in the Bouma National Heritage Park – are some of island’s most popular. Pay the small entry fee at the visitor centre and take a short stroll to reach the first and largest waterfall. With a huge plunge pool, changing rooms and tables to picnic on, you might be tempted to spend the whole day here. But if you’re up for a hike and some breathtaking panoramic views, you should follow the path up the hill to reach the second and third waterfalls as well.

Picturesque Natewa Bay – the largest bay in the South Pacific – is home to two large pods of spinner dolphins.  Join a guided tour and spend an enjoyable morning tracking their playful antics on the water.

Bishop's Tomb

Make sure you visit the tiny village of Cawaci, just a few minutes north of Levuka, to see one of the island’s most distinctive buildings. Bishop’s Tomb is the final resting place of Fiji’s first Catholic Bishop and his successor.

The first thing you’ll notice about JHunter pearls is their unusual earthy hues of metallic blues, cool greens and bright bronzes. At just 2500 pearls per harvest, they are the rarest pearls in the world and coveted by top European jewelers. Peek behind the curtains and see how they’re made at the JHunter pearl farm in Savusavu Bay. 

On the tour you’ll learn how they load and clean the lines and even watch them seeding or harvesting during the season. Bring your own snorkels if you want to swim over the shell beds as well.

Wainibau Waterfall

The 10-km (roundtrip) Lavena Coastal Walk starts at Lavena Village and weaves its way south along Taveuni's rugged coast to beautiful Wainibau Waterfall. Part of the Bouma National Heritage Park, this (mostly flat) well-worn track teems with vibrant flowers, native birds, a rope-assisted river crossing and countless beaches and lagoons.   

Wainibau waterfall sits at the head of the track but you’ll have to swim or wade your way upstream through a picturesque gorge to reach it. If you’d rather save your energy for the falls, you can also hire a boat directly to Wainibau and explore other exquisite waterfalls that tumble into the sea along this scenic coast.

Lots of other Fijian native birds share this island with numerous seabirds; especially on uninhabited Yabu Island near Ono. You might not have to wander too far from your resort to see many of them but traipsing through the rainforest and mangroves is its own adventure too.
