Explore Taveuni

Rainbow Reef

Dive or snorkel the Rainbow Reef

Most visitors to this corner of Fiji come for the scuba diving. The Somosomo Strait (which separates the islands of Taveuni and Vanua Levu) is home to the vivid soft corals of the Rainbow Reef. Strong currents sweep nutrient-rich water through the Strait, feeding the reef’s brilliant colour and life. With around 25 world-class dive sites (including the Great White Wall) every dive here is unforgettable. Visit between June and August and you might spot manta rays and whales cruising the Strait as well.

Tavoro (Bouma) Falls

Bouma National Heritage Park spans a third of Taveuni - 150 km² of rainforest, hidden trails, and wild coastline. It’s part of a protected trio with the Waitabu Marine Reserve and Lavena Coastal Walk, and home to the stunning triple Tavoro (Bouma) Waterfalls. The first (and tallest) waterfall is an easy 10-minute stroll from the visitor centre, while the other two sit higher up the track, rewarding hikers with stunning views and jungle pools.  The trail uphill gets steep and slippery in some places, so it’s best for seasoned hikers. Pack swimmers, good shoes, and go with a local guide who knows the trail well.

Birdwatching

Taveuni is a birdwatcher’s dream; lush, wild, and full of rare birdlife. It’s one of the best places in Fiji to spot island native birdlife like the Orange Dove, the Silk Tail, Taveuni Red Shining Parrot and up to 100 other bird species. Wander through rainforest trails with your binoculars or book with Wings & Fins Tours or Bobby’s Farm who know where the birding magic happens.

Lavena Coast

Lavena Coastal Walk

The 5km out-and-back Lavena Coastal Walk is a must-do on Taveuni’s wild southeast coast. Starting in Lavena Village, the trail winds past white-sand beaches, over rocky streams, and through lush jungle before ending with a refreshing swim at the stunning Wainibau Waterfall. If tides and weather allow, you can also take the Lavena boat tour to view more waterfalls that tumble straight into the sea further down the coast.  Here’s how to hike the Lavena Coastal Walk.

Vuna Blowholes

Taveuni’s volcanic roots run deep and the Vuna Blowholes are the best spot to see this.  To get there, follow the road south past Vuna Village to the spot where ancient lava flows meet the sea and waves blast plumes of seawater through the rocks.  For maximum drama, time your visit with a rising mid-to-high tide.  Even better if you catch it with a southeast swell and golden morning or afternoon light. The rocks are sharp and uneven, so wear sturdy shoes, walk slowly and bring a towel for the sea spray.

Des Vouex Peak / Tagimoucia

Take the 4WD up to Des Vouex Peak and get off the beaten track into Jurassic Park-like jungle brimming with native birdlife. Avid bird watchers should be on the lookout for the Blue Crested Flycatcher or the elusive Orange Dove. Serious hikers can explore further to Lake Tagimoucia, a crater lake 823m above sea level where the scarlet endemic Tagimoucia flower blooms each year between the months of October and December.  This tour is best done in clear weather, when there are no clouds in the mountains.

Bobby’s Farm

Nabogiono Farms is a 100-acre eco-haven in southern Taveuni that’s the perfect tour for anyone curious about birds, local plants, and tasty island food.  Kick off your day with an early-morning birdwatching tour to spot rare birds like the Orange Dove and Silk Tail, or join a three-hour guided stroll through the farm learning about traditional plants and sustainable farming from Bobby himself. Tours usually wrap up at the farmhouse with a fresh, garden-to-table vegan lunch.

Civa Pearl Farm

If you’re curious about pearls, take a short boat ride out to Civa Pearl Farm on Taveuni’s east coast and find out how they’re made. Floating above the bright blue reef, the pearl shack offers a peek into how oysters are seeded, grown, and harvested. Bring your snorkelling gear and you can also explore the surrounding reef after.  Tours usually run Monday to Thursday (2pm), with more flexible times on Fridays (just call ahead for bookings). Don’t leave without checking out their rare, coloured pearls and handcrafted jewellery; it’s the perfect island keepsake.

Waitavala Waterslide

Thrill seekers love the Waitavala waterslide near Waiyevo town. This 50m natural waterslide is a meandering, rollicking ride that’ll have you going back for more. A short stroll from the road, this hidden gem is not for the fainthearted and you should avoid going after heavy rainfall in high flow. To cushion the bumpy bits and avoid bruises, cover up with long shorts, reef shoes and a rash guard and let the local kids show you how it’s done. You’ll want your action camera handy for this one!
