Vegetarian Paradise: Exploring Fiji's Plant-Based Delights

Fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, nutrient packed seaweeds and rich multi-cultural food influences ensures that there are heaps of vegetarian-friendly options in Fiji to please your plant-based palette.

Resorts

Resorts

Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian or have food allergies, it’s always a great idea to check that a resort can cater for your dietary needs before you book – especially if they are a smaller or remote property. Most should be able to cater to your needs but will need planning to adjust their menu and order ingredients. Many major resorts and some in the outer islands have established food gardens to ensure a steady supply of fresh, organic fruit and vegetables for their menus.

Traditional Fijian Cuisine

Traditional Fijian Cuisine

Fijian cuisine is like a flavor fiesta! Seafood takes the spotlight, dancing with plant staples like dalo, cassava, kumala, yam, and more. They cook up a storm—boiled, roasted, fried—perfect sides for your food adventure.

Now, let's talk greens: rourou, duruka, ota, and those nutrient-packed seaweeds, jazzed up with miti—coconut cream, lemony zing, onions, chili, tomatoes, and savory herbs. Sounds delish, right? Don't miss the weekly lovo feast at the big resorts, a feast for your senses. And for the full Fijian flavor, hit up spots like Nadina (Port Denarau), Tukuni (Lautoka), Kanalevu Kitchen (Suva) and Barbelle (Suva).

Indian & Asian Cuisine

You’ll also find vegetarian dishes at Chinese, Japanese and Korean restaurants in the larger towns and cities. Notable restaurants with a vegetarian-friendly menu include Govinda's Vegetarian Restaurant (Suva) Veggie Restaurant (Suva), Grace Kitchen (Viti Levu), Byblos (Denarau) and Saravana Bhavan (Nadi Temple)

Urban Supermarkets & Markets

If you’re headed to the outer islands or a remote region, hit up the supermarkets in the larger towns for some snacks like muesli bars, dried fruits, chips or dairy free chocolate before you go. Municipal food markets in the larger towns are also a wonderful place to pick up seasonal tropical fruit like mangoes, watermelon, bananas and pineapples at crazy cheap prices. Weekends (Friday & Saturday) are when you’ll find a great variety.
