Since it was first played here in 1884, Fijians natural speed and agility (perhaps borne out of structured battles of traditional warfare) have electrified rugby fields the world over. Links to these ancient battles continue today with a symbolic cibi or bole at the start of international rugby games - a tantalizing and spiritually charged war challenge to rouse the opposition.
Through rugby 7s, 15s and league, Fiji has one of the highest player-population ratios of any rugby playing nation, with over 600 clubs, 30 rugby unions across Fiji’s 14 provinces and more than 30,000 provincial and school-level players. The Fijian flair on the rugby field is only matched by the passion of its supporters both locally and abroad.
Accolades include four World Rugby Sevens Series titles, two Rugby World Cup Sevens titles, two Olympic 7s gold medals, one Olympic bronze medal, three Commonwealth Games silver medals and the impeccable pedigrees of Waisale Serevi (hailed as the best rugby sevens player in the world) and Jerry Tuwai (the best sevens player of the decade) by World Rugby. No small feat for this small island nation.
