Taveuni is Fiji’s third-largest island, located just across the Somosomo Strait from Vanua Levu in the north-east of the country.
The surrounding region includes smaller islands such as Matangi, Qamea and Laucala, as well as coastal resorts across the strait on Vanua Levu.

Yes, especially if you’re looking for a quieter, more low-key side of Fiji. Taveuni suits travellers who prefer fewer crowds and a slower pace, with a strong focus on nature and the outdoors. It’s especially popular with divers, hikers and couples looking for something off the beaten path.
If you’re short on time, follow this 3-day Taveuni itinerary, or stay longer to explore more of the island.
Taveuni is easy to navigate, but travel times between activities is deceptive so planning ahead helps.
Accommodation is mostly along the Somosomo Strait, from Matei in the north to Vuna in the south.
Small local stores selling basic supplies are located near the airport in Matei and in Naqara township. Naqara is also where you’ll find more shops, supermarkets, telecommunications outlets, a bank and an ATM. There are no pharmacies in Taveuni so it’s a good idea to bring essentials and precription medicines with you.
Dining options outside your resort are minimal, so many accommodations include or offer daily meal plans. Tromonto Restaurant (near Matei) has great reviews and for barista coffee, stop by The Dive Café (Tides Reach Resort) or Kai Time Restaurant (Aroha Taveuni Resort) on your travels around the island.
Wi-Fi and mobile coverage can be patchy and non-existent in some parts of the island, but that’s perfect for switching off and enjoying island life. Just let your resort know your plans before you head out so they know when to expect you back.
If you’re heading out, always take a local guide who knows the area and conditions best.
Getting to Taveuni is easier than it looks, with regular flights from Nadi and Suva as well as ferry connections from Vanua Levu and Suva. Most resorts will organise transfers on your arrival.
