Explore Fiji’s Natural Beauty

Fiji is chock-full of adventures where you can enjoy nature without harming it. Discover ways to experience Fiji's natural beauty without impacting the environment.

Hiking

Hiking

Swap Fiji’s stunning beaches for a few days of inland exploration on our larger islands. With no venomous predators, snakes or spiders, your biggest worries will be the heat and terrain so cover up and take lots of water. True adventurers can join a multi-day cross-island hike with Talanoa Treks led by local guides and hosted overnight in remote villages. For more panoramic vistas, the rolling hills of Nadi’s hinterland or craggy peaks of the Yasawa Islands never disappoint. Consult this guide to Fiji’s best walks and hiking trails for more inspiration on where to go hiking in Fiji.

Birdwatching

With 166 species of birds (including 35 endemics), Fiji is a great place to test your observation and identification skills, cross rare birds off your ‘life list’ and immerse yourself in beautiful, natural landscapes.

For the best birdwatching opportunities in Fiji, head to bird hotspots like Taveuni, Kadavu and parts of Viti Levu like the Colo-I-Suva Rainforest Park. Keep an eye out for endemics like the musk parrots, orange or golden fruit dove, Fiji silktail or the elusive red-throated lorikeet. Local NGO Nature Fiji-Mareqeti Viti, helps conserve Fiji’s unique habitats and wildlife. Contact them for detailed information on the best bird-watching areas in Fiji and knowledgeable local guides.

Waterfalls

Waterfalls

Escape the tropical heat with a rejuvenating plunge beneath Fiji’s incredible waterfalls. Fiji boasts an abundance of cascades, but Taveuni’s mist-covered peaks, forest-draped slopes and small size make it a waterfall-hopping dream. Visit Tavoro’s triple cascades, whiz down Waitavala’s natural waterslide or stroll the 5km Lavena Coastal Walk to Wainibau waterfall.

Viti Levu also boasts several waterfall gems including Biausevu (Coral Coast), Savulelele (Suncoast) and more remote falls in the island’s rugged interior which you can visit with Domoika Adventures or Namosi Eco Retreat.

Surfing (and other board sports)

Surfing

Cloudbreak may have put Fiji on the surfing map, but surf lovers will find heaps of other reasons to love Fiji’s oceanic playground. This notorious left-hand break – along with a handful of other excellent waves for all skill levels – is located in the southern Mamanuca islands.  But you’ll also find world-class breaks like Frigates off Pacific Harbour and the Coral Coast. And when the surf’s not pumping, there are plenty of other spots to foil, SUP or kiteboard (during the windy season) to your heart’s content. Check out these reasons to add Fiji to your surf bucket list and start planning an epic surf trip.

Sea-Kayaking

Sea-kayaking

Sheltered by protective coral reefs, Fiji’s regional island chains are ideal setting for sea kayaking safaris. Tamarillo Active Travel have been organising sea-kayaking expeditions in the southern island of Kadavu since 1998. Their year-round, multi-day itineraries, hop between picturesque beaches with opportunities to snorkel, fish, hike and even dive on the Great Astrolabe Reef along the way. Tours are guided, private (for 2-14 people) and include catering. At the end of each day’s adventure, you can look forward to a comfy bed and amenities at small eco-resorts and village homestays.

Southern Sea Ventures run similar multi-day sea-kayaking tours in the Yasawa Islands to the north-west of Fiji, though their routes vary at different times of the year. Your itinerary may include visits to a select few islands or the entire island chain, featuring camping on secluded beaches, stays in village homestays or resorts, and activities such as snorkelling, cave exploration or even swimming with manta rays.

Snorkeling or Scuba Diving

Snorkeling

Technicolor coral reefs and rich marine life are just two of the reasons Fiji is an irresistible destination for both snorkelers and scuba divers. Fiji’s allure also lies in the wide array of dive sites and diving experiences. And of course, the year-round warm water - averaging 23 – 27°C  (73 – 81°F) - is a huge plus! Fiji also boasts an easily accessible, accredited and established dive industry that both novice and experienced divers will appreciate. Whether you’re discovering a world-class dive site like the Great White Wall, exploring remote reefs on a liveaboard like the Nai’a or documenting Fiji’s famous soft coral on an underwater photography course with Waterlust Fiji Dive Adventures, you’ll find heaps to love about Fiji’s underwater world.

White-Water River Rafting

White-Water River Rafting

Beauty and thrills combine on the river-rafting tour as you ride the Class II-III rapids of the upper Navua River near Pacific Harbour. Expert guides will navigate the boulder-strewn whitewater amidst cascading waterfalls and forest-clad canyon walls.

To safeguard this pristine environment, the rafting company (Rivers Fiji), NGOs, local landowners and the Fijian government established the Upper Navua Conservation Area, a globally recognized RAMSAR site. A portion of every fee is returned to the local landowners and to preserving this stretch of river. Rafting tours are available 3 times a week (Mon, Wed, Fri) and suitable for ages 8yrs+. The company also offers kayaking tours through a different section of the Navua River on Tues, Thurs and Sat.
